22. Sanskrit Workshop
Tuesday, January 10, 2012 7 am-5 pm UNION/YOGA, Lake Leelanau, MI
$250.00
Please join us in welcoming Nell S. Hawley, SANSKRIT NYC, to UNION/YOGA for this in-depth Sanskrit Workshop! Nell will focus on the Nirvāṇaṣaṭkam of Śankarācārya, a beautiful six verse poem about the unity (yoga!) between the individual and the divine (in the form of the god Śiva). You will receive a fundamental understanding of the Sanskrit language, essential for students and teachers of yoga... Not only is Sanskrit the sacred scriptural language of yoga, its vibrational properties are healing, in and of themselves. The wisdom of Sanskrit is not just in the meaning, but in the tonal quality, and harmonic resonance.
Over the course of this workshop, attendees will carefully work through the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and meaning of the Nirvāṇaṣaṭkam. There will be a special focus on the connection of the poem to the mental, spiritual, and physical practice of yoga. No prior knowledge of Sanskrit is necessary or required. Attendees will be provided with copies of the poem in devanāgarī (Sanskrit) script and in transliteration, as well as with a Sanskrit alphabet reference sheet and a complete glossary. All are advised to bring a notebook, pencil, and lots of enthusiasm!
OVERVIEW:
The six-verse Nirvāṇaṣaṭkam is one of the most precious gems of poetry and philosophy ever to emerge from the early South Asian intellectual tradition. Composed in the ninth century by the great philosopher-saint Śaṅkara, the Nirvāṇaṣaṭkam expresses a concept central to Śaṅkara’s teachings: the possibility of unity with the divine. Śaṅkara is widely lauded as the founder of Advaita Vedānta, a nondualistic philosophy/theology whose richness has permeated South Asian thought, ritual, and religious practice since its inception and that continues to reign supreme in many strands of Hinduism today. Advaita Vedānta proposes that the true and universal self (ātma) is one with the indescribable divine (brahma), although our ignorance prevents us from seeing ourselves as anything other than discrete individuals. Śaṅkara was himself a prolific intellectual, penning commentaries on the Vedas, the Upaniṣads, the Bhagavadgītā, and the Yogasūtras. His deep knowledge of these texts, as well as of other “schools” of Indian philosophy, provide valuable avenues through which to connect the Nirvāṇaṣaṭkam to its intellectual family – and especially to the theory and practice of yoga.
The Nirvāṇaṣaṭkam presents the philosophical principles of Advaita Vedānta enclosed within a poem as lovely as any in the Sanskrit literary tradition. Its elegant construction and immense aesthetic appeal make it an excellent piece for chanting. The work employs simple grammar and a spiritually relevant vocabulary, making it ideal for the beginning Sanskrit student and yoga practitioner. Its gentle refrain, cidānandarūpaḥ śivo ‘haṃ śivo ‘ham,” (one possible translation: “I am Śiva, I am Śiva, whose form is bliss and consciousness”) will stay with you long after the workshop has ended.
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Nell S. Hawley is a Sanskrit tutor and elementary school teacher in New York City. She recently graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College, where she studied Sanskrit for four years. Her prizewinning thesis was the first ever monograph-length work on the Karṇabhāram, an oft-overlooked comedy attributed to the early Sanskrit playwright Bhāsa and based on the Sanskrit epic Mahābhārata. Nell has spent approximately two years of her life in India, where she has gone to school, worked at several NGOs, and, of course, studied Sanskrit. She now divides her time between the East Harlem Tutorial Program, where she teaches fourth grade, and SANSKRIT NYC, her growing Sanskrit tutoring practice.
$250 (includes meals)
Yoga Alliance approved CEUs are offered for this workshop.
