March 11-13, 2010
8:00 AM - Noon, 1:00-5:00 PM
UNION/YOGA, Lake Leelanau, MI

Join us for three days of deep inquiry, building upon your knowledge of self and how to selflessly assist others, in a loving and professional manner.

YOGA LIFESTYLE & ETHICAL ISSUES:
Course objectives include examination of yoga as an Integrated lifestyle, rather than something confined to the mat. Our focus is on the creation and sustenance of a living practice that sustains a happy, healthy, wholesome life. Our aim is to bring a yogic cultural worldview to a pedestrian, practical, and applicable level, and to regard “yoga as a practice, not an exercise, a ritual, not a routine.” Ethics for Yoga Teachers: Course objectives include adoption of internationally approved guidelines for ethical behavior of yoga teachers, investigation of common modern and classical ethical dilemmas, with resource guidelines from the yamas and niyamas of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

THERAPEUTIC YOGA:
Our focus is on how to work with students in a yogic approach to therapy. We take a broad scope for both short-term rehabilitation, and long-term chronic illness, through proper breathing, dietary modifications, stress reduction, physical reintegration, emotional stabilization, and the examination of the meaning of recovery. We recognize each individual as unique, and do not “treat” any specific illness, but rather understand the role of the yoga educator as one of compassionate active listener, in partnership with the client in designing a full spectrum yogic approach to wellness.

YOGA BUSINESS SKILLS:
Course objectives include how to set up a sole proprietorship, LLC, etc., and registering a DBA. Record keeping includes income vs. expense categories, financial management, tax issues, insurance, and database and accounting software. Marketing and advertising for the success of your small yoga business is examined, including print, electronic, and cyber marketing, via the worldwide web.

Pranayama: The Yoga of Breath & Vipassana Meditation Workshop
Friday, November 5 - Sunday, November 7, 2010
Fri/Sat: 8:00 AM-4:00 PM & Sun: 8:00-3:00 PM
UNION/YOGA, Lake Leelanau, MI

Join us for this three day, transforming and educational workshop!

Prana, in part, refers to the Air element, and the function of sustaining life through breath. The heart and lungs work in tandem to oxygenate the body and to release toxins through the permeable wall of each and every cell. Each beat of the heart nourishes, renews and revivifies the body, as it cleanses and purifies. PRANAYAMA is the Sanskrit word that defines the process of conscious breathing; pran+a+yama. Prana, alone, means “life force,” and the energy that sustains life. Ayama means to stretch, or to give extension to. Yama means to hold back, or give restraint, or to control. So, therefore pranayama means to maintain life by the extension and restraining of breath.

Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. Vipassana is a way of self-transformation through self-observation. It focuses on the deep interconnection between mind and body, which can be experienced directly by disciplined attention to the physical sensations that form the life of the body, and that continuously interconnect and condition the life of the mind. It is this observation-based, self-exploratory journey to the common root of mind and body that dissolves mental impurity, resulting in a balanced mind full of love and compassion.

YOGA THERAPEUTIC: Yoga for Healthy Backs
November 13, 2010
Noon - 4:00 PM
UNION/YOGA, Lake Leelanau, MI

One in 5 people suffer “back pain” at some point in their lives, and back pain is the second greatest reason people need to take time off from work, after colds and flu. If you are looking for an alternative to back pain and drugs, yoga may help. Yoga can release the entire spinal column from sacrum to cranium, resulting in increased range of motion and muscle strength, integrity of the body in motion, and reduction of pain. Many postures presented are suitable for practice in a public setting, as in an office, and are taught from a seated position in a chair. You’ll find many ways to incorporate the techniques of better alignment and breathing in your daily life.
