The Sanskrit weekend is a required module (10 hours) of UNION/YOGA Master Teacher Training. All serious students are welcome to attend.
Students will learn proper pronunciation of Sanskrit asana names, and pronunciation and chanting of Patanjali's sutras related to ishvarapranidhana, and the pranava (the sound of OM) . We will be practicing japa (chant) of one of the most ancient mantras, the Gayatri Mantra, the beautiful acknowledgement of Light, from the Rig Veda.
Cynthia Snodgrass has an undergraduate degree in Renaissance Music and a Master's degree in Musicology from Syracuse University, as well as a Master's of Divinity from Bexley Hall Episcopal Seminary. She has conducted extensive research into the world's spiritual traditions of sacred sound, which resulted in the founding of the Sacred Sound Institute and the writing of The Sonic Thread: Sound as a Pathway to Spirituality. She has studied Sanskrit extensively with Vyaas Houston of the American Sanskrit Institute, as well as at Harvard University, while being a Senior Instructor for American Sanskrit. She has also produced two CDs: Waters from the Son/Waters from the Moon: An Altar of Sound and Dream Chants.

Practicum Orientation and Mentoring

The Practicum is an essential and required portion of UNION/YOGA Master Level Teacher Training. It consists of 3 main components. Registering for this module provides you with a 3 hour Orientation to Practicum AND 7 hours of individual coaching by a 500-level teacher, which is the first component of Practicum.

During the Orientation you will receive details about the practicum components and you will learn the process of preparing for, giving, and reporting on private yoga lessons. Topics will include initial intake interview, intake form, choosing appropriate postures based on client needs, structuring the session to be both therapeutic and enjoyable, and the right of refusing a client.
As mentioned above, registration for this module entitles you to 7 hours of individual coaching by an experienced teacher. This coaching will support you through the complete UYTT Master Level program. Mentoring can occur through scheduled phone sessions.
At the Orientation session on October 14 you will learn more about the other Practicum components: Practicum Contact hours and Non-Contact hours. These portions will develop your confidence and skill as a master level teacher, and are required to meet Yoga Alliance standards and for graduation from this program. These components are in addition to this module.

Silent Retreat: Meditation and Tantric Philosophy

Until you have experienced it, no one can adequately describe for you the gift of silence. In this retreat, you will have ample amounts of time to sink into your own inner stillness. Yoga and the reading of Laya Yoga and other Tantric texts will ground your practice.
On this retreat we will practice silent concentration, breath techniques and asana to actuate and support the arousing of kundalini. All meals are taken in silence and are therefore an integral part of the practice.
Participants meet with a spiritual advisor for one hour per day for support and direction.
